It’s game release time, and there’s a hot crop of games coming out on the horizon. The hottest title this week has to be Star Fox Zero. The first Star Fox games came out over 19 years ago, but now the franchise has been brought to Wii U. It’s a 3D shooter video game, and is the sixth in the series. Creators and developers are not calling it a sequel or a prequel, and the game has been delayed since November, but is now finally here.
You play as the Star Fox himself, Fox McCloud and pilot the Arwing fighter.
- Watch video screens as you frantically shoot down waves of attacking robots
- Defend your facility from the evil (but cute) forces of Andross
- Create your own waves of attacking enemies and share them with friends
- Level up to unlock more missions and special cameras
You’ll use your GamePad to control the Arwing, which may prove cumbersome for some. You’re forced to use the GamePad so if you like the controller, you’ll like the game, but if you don’t, you’ll probably be irritated. The controls take center stage here, where you use the GamePad to aim and even get communication from characters through the controller’s speakers. You’ll also need to use it for looking at the cockpit view, so get used to the GamePad’s use in the game.
There’s also an accompanying game called Star Fox Guard, a tower defense game. If your copy of Star Fox Zero didn’t come with the title, you can download it seperately from the eShop Star Fox Guard also relies heavily on the Wii U GamePad. Here the GamePad also comes in play. On it, you’ll see the overview view of your base that you must defend, then the television displays footage from the base’s security cameras. You have to switch controls to the appropriate camera to fire your weapon, and you’ll be fighting enemies. Your enemies are Combat robots and Chaos robots, and there are 100 missions, plus an editor so you can edit the enemies to share with others online. To promote the game, a new animated short, Star Fox Zero: The Battle Begins, was released online on April 20.
Star Fox Zero is the first Star Fox game on a home console in over 10 years. Previous Star Fox titles had been canceled, including the title Star Fox 2, Star Fox for Virtual Boy, and Star Fox Arcade.
