Gameplay and Platforms
The game is available in the Apple iTunes and Google Play stores. While the game is free to play, it’s a freemenium title, which means there’s certain content in-game that will cost real cash. Avengers Academy was developed by TinyCo, the company behind the official Family Guy mobile game, Family Guy: The Quest for Stuff. True to its name, the game is centered around a university and the associated activities such a school would have – with a Marvel twist. One thing to know is this game is not about the comic book storyline about the Avengers Academy. The game’s world has the characters already having their powers, and being rounded up for this superhero school, a premise you can see in the trailer below.
The activities and gameplay are decidedly teen-centric, with characters going on dates and learning. However, the game starts in a Marvel way, with Tony Stark (aka Iron Man) joining the Avengers Academy. Marvel and TinyCo included familiar Stark assistant Pepper Potts, only now she’s working at the school instead of for Tony. The storyline includes mentions of Hydra, a thread that continues the world-building present in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and TV’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Tony is then tasked with recruiting other young superheroes to help in the fight against Hydra.
Once you get your first recruit, you then will need to build buildings of the university, and recruit more members. Different buildings have assigned activities, and each activity completion earns you credits, the game’s in-game currency. However, the game has switched things up a bit, because Loki, the mischievous brother of Thor, is also going to attend the school, and will take some convincing.
The rest of the game continues with activities and missions. Marvel has plans to expand the game as well, with new villains and superheroes, For casual gamers who love Marvel, it should be a good time with some of your favorite superheroes, or their younger selves, anyway. Others characters include Hawkeye, Vision, Ant-Man, War Machine, Captain Marvel, Winter Soldier, Black Panther, Enchantress and Taskmaster.
