Ghostbusters Games Coming

The saga of the Ghostbusters lives again, this time in video game form. The reboot of the Ghostbusters film franchise is arriving this summer, with a new female-led installment directed by Paul Feig. The film stars funny ladies Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon, and is hotly anticipated by some, maligned by others. Now comes news that film company Sony and game developer Activision will release new game titles for the Ghostbusters universe. The Ghostbusters game selection includes a mobile game, plus console games for PC (Steam), Xbox and PlayStation 4.

The PC and console game is currently just known as Ghostbusters, however, the box art for the PlayStation 4 version was released. The mobile game is known as Ghostbusters: Slime City. Both games take place in the same universe after the events of the 2016 Ghostbusters film but with a twist for the leading characters. Surprisingly the new Ghostbusters game will not have the same heroes as the movie. Instead the announcement press release teases that “both Ghostbusters games introduce new casts of rookies (male and female) keeping watch over the station while the now-famous Ghostbusters tour the country stopping high-profile poltergeists. When paranormal phenomena unleash apparitions across New York City, these new squads of recruits must don their proton packs and wrestle those rogue spirits back to the afterlife!”

The console and PC Ghostbusters game will be a four-player role-playing game. We don’t know quite about the gameplay of Ghostbusters: Slime City, but it should involve NYC, the Ghostbusters, and Slime..possibly Slimer? Sony and Activision shared an announcement trailer and screenshots showing gameplay, which you can check out below. As you can see, two females and two males make up the heroes. You can collect gear, upgrade your proton pack, find collectibles, and level up as you catch ghosts all over the Big Apple. Each hero you choose to play as will have their own unique style and personality.

The rest should be revealed closer to the movie, but for now, it’s a nice peek into a hot franchise. For die-hard fans of Ghostbusters world, the game should hopefully fill a void as the last Ghostbusters video game was released in 2009. The movie is a hotly-debated topic on social media and in the comments of entertainment websites, and the game may draw the same attention.

The console games will arrive on July 12, a few days before the movie’s release date of July 15; the mobile game will arrive mid-July. The mobile game’s release should be announced closer to July.  The mobile release will be a wide release, with Ghostbusters: Slime City game available on iOS, Google Play, and Kindle’s app store.
