Disney Pulls the Plug on Disney Infinity

Disney Infinity is being discontinued. The character figurine/game hybrid was first released in 2013 and had nearly 300,000 copies sold in its first week, but it seems Disney has found it’s time to shut the doors, announcing the end of Disney Infinity. Disney made $200 million on the property last year, and worked with a variety of independent studios to create the expansive series as well as founding their own internal studio, Avalanche. Speaking about the end of Disney Infinity, Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media Chairman Jimmy Pitaro says:

After a thorough evaluation, we have modified our approach to console gaming and will transition exclusively to a licensing model. This shift in strategy means we will cease production of Disney Infinity, where the lack of growth in the toys-to-life market, coupled with high development costs, has created a challenging business model.  This means that we will be shutting down Avalanche, our internal studio that developed the game.  This was a difficult decision that we did not take lightly given the quality of Disney Infinity and its many passionate fans.

Upon news of the cancellation, tidbits about the now-cancelled figures began to leak. Disney will release the new Star Wars movie, Rogue One, in theaters this fall, and Disney Infinity would’ve been included characters from the new franchise installment. Reports also say that Disney Infinity 4.0 would’ve been a mish-mash of all of Disney’s hot brands, its own characters, plus Marvel and Star Wars. Now it seems, those plans are no more. The 12-inch characters would’ve been Elsa, Jack Skellington, Hulk, and Darth Vader – looking at that lineup, it seems they would’ve been sure bestsellers for the company.

Given that Disney Infinity 4.0 was underway in some stage of development, it comes as a shock that Disney would pull the plug on the entire project. Disney has a handfull in hotly-anticipated films in various stages of development, and Disney Infinity 4.0 would reportedly have featured those titles, like Cars 3, Thor: Ragnorak, Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man Tell No Tales, and Guardians of the Galaxy 2.

Disney Infinity is a sandbox title, where players can create their own game, and let characters  interact with others. The reason why Disney Infinity 4.0 was reportedly in development is that the company doesn’t currently let players have their characters interact outside brands, i.e, Star Wars figures can’t interact with Marvel and vice versa. The upcoming version of Disney Infinity would’ve resolved this issue, and also reportedly include a new take on the Toy Box feature.

Disney Infinity 3.0 game is available for Xbox, PlayStation 3, Wii U, Wii, and Nintendo 3DS and supports Apple TV, and the Toy Box game is available on PC. Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes is also available for iOS, Playstation 3 and 4, Wii U, Windows, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Playstation Vita.

There are still two remaining releases for Disney Infinity: later this month, gamers can get three new characters frm Alice Through the Looking Glass, and June will bring a new set based on the Pixar/Disney collaboration Finding Dory.
