Beyond Good and Evil 2 is like the holy grail for gamers who loved the initial release. Its existence has been rumored repeatedly, yet no follow-up to the game has ever surfaced. However, new rumors about a possible part two are heating up again – and this time they might actually have some validity.
For the uninitiated, Beyond Good and Evil is an action-adventure video game published by Ubisoft and released in late 2003 for the PlayStation 2, Microsoft Windows, Xbox and GameCube platforms. The game tells the story of Jade, an investigative reporter and martial arts master who works with a resistance movement to discover an alien conspiracy that threatens the planet. The player controls Jade and her allies, requiring the player to fight enemies, solve puzzles and compile photographic evidence supporting the conspiracy.
Michel Ancel, who also created the Rayman series, always planned for the game to be the first in a trilogy. However, the release was a commercial failure, which put future plans in doubt. Despite its commercial shortcomings, the game became a critical hit, even receiving a nomination for “Game of the Year” at the 2004 Game Developers Choice Awards.
An HD re-mastered version of the game was released on Xbox Live Arcade in March 2011, and later that year it was launched for PlayStation Network. Ubisoft insists that they are committed to the project, but the rumors never amount to concrete data. However, now Destructoid says the game could be a reality, and suggests that Beyond Good and Evil 2 will be an NX exclusive in 2017.
Destructoid’s source is Alexander Maier, the Dual Pixels writer who published a column on Geno’s recent NX hardware rumors last weekend. Geno has been proven right before, having successfully leaked new Pokémon forms and Microsoft’s IllumiRoom project. He gave Maier a lengthy document detailing the plans, which was then given to Destructoid.
Destructoid then reached out to a second source for verification. That source verified many of the same bullet points about Beyond Good and Evil 2. The similarities between the two sources gave Destructoid the confidence to say that the rumor may well be true. Of course nothing short of confirmation by Nintendo should make the sequel a certainty, but the reports are encouraging in a number of ways.
The alleged leak says the game is being called “Beyond Good and Evil: The Prejudices of Philosophers.” This appears to be a reference to a chapter in the philosophical text Beyond Good and Evil by Friedrich Nietzsche, which is all about how authorities can manipulate reality and morality, and how black-and-white morality tends to black out important nuances about morals.
If Nintendo plans to release the game on NX, then it is probably part of a strategy of pleasing audiences who have hotly anticipated the sequel for years, with the hope that they will support the NX. This might be a smart play by Nintendo. It would also explain why Ancel and Tim Schafer kept referring to Shigeru Miyamoto in their recent Devs Play for Beyond Good and Evil. Would Beyond Good and Evil 2 get you to buy an NX next year? Of course, we haven’t seen any hint of this in a Nintendo Direct, but time will tell.
