GameStop Teams Up with Insomniac Games for Song of the Deep

Popular game retailer GameStop has moved from selling games into publishing them, with an upcoming release slated for this summer. They recently shared information on their first title, Song of the Deep, along with a game trailer and a look at the game’s narrative. The trailer reveals a beautifully-depicted dreamy underwater world for gamers to explore, with exquisite visuals offered by developer Insomniac Games. View it below:

Song of the Deep is a 2D quest-based game, filled with puzzles that are used to unlock new parts of the world. Players play as Merryn, a young girl on a quest for her missing father. According to Insomniac Games, it “combines discovery, skill and suspense with an unforgettable narrative.”

The storyline was described in depth by the developer:

Merryn waits all night for her father to return from his fishing voyage. He never does. After a vivid dream showing her father trapped under the sea, Merryn is determined to save him. This unlikely heroine builds a small submarine from spare parts and sets off to rescue him. Along the way, she’ll make friends, discover lost civilizations and ruins, and upgrade her submarine to explore even deeper. The terrain and monsters of the deep are daunting, but Merryn’s courage, intelligence, and love for her father will help her overcome adversity.

Though Song of the Deep appears to offer spellbinding visuals and dreamy music, the developers want the game to be more than just a pretty diversion for players.

“We don’t want this to be just a world of beautiful background,” Chief Creative Officer Brian Hastings said. “We want it to be interactive, like a children’s science museum on an alien planet.” Hastings developed the game as a passion project, inspired by his daughter.

Bosses Merryn encounters will include giant jellies and other creatures determined to stop the girl on her mission, and the landscape includes bone yards, ruins and gardens, all reached by Merryn in her submarine. Game details mention upgrades to the submarine will allow players to reach new areas of the sea, while the developer has referred to it as a “gorgeous metroidvania.”

Already the Song of the Deep trailer is winning rave reviews, with gaming journalists commenting on its beauty and ethereal quality. For those who enjoy playing Child of the Light, Song of the Deep looks like a perfect title. Song of the Deep arrives in stores this summer and will be available for PS4,, XBoxOne and PC. The game is currently on pre-order at the GameStop website for $14.99. It looks like it has a good crossover appeal for young and old(er) games.
